So I’m standing in my laundry room peeling layers of tape and cardboard off of perfectly rolled pairs of panties for a 4-year-old with fingers already raw from twist ties and hard plastic packaging thinking, “Is this really necessary?”
In a world where recycling is required, composting is the latest fad, Energy Star earns you tax rebates, and Al Gore can win a nobel prize for drawing “the world’s attention to the dangers of global warming,” how are the toy-packaging gurus sliding under the radar of the environmental(nuts) of the world? For heaven’s sake, I can save up to 5 cents a bag at the grocery store for not wasting a small plastic bag that I’ll probably reuse anyway…that’s how concerned the we (well, not me but the more global sense of “we”) are with the impact of plastic bags on our environment. But I have to take out an 80 gallon trash can twice a week in December and January to rid our house of all the toy packaging (mostly non-recyclable plastic) that accompanies the smallest of trinkets and toys.
Call me crazy, but it all seems paradoxical (ok, downright silly) to me. If the environment is in so much danger, will someone please put a stop to all the packaging madness? If it isn’t, can we put a stop to all the drama (oh, and no one would probably complain if the toy packaging madness still stopped)?
Please forward to Washington!
