Geographies of Kinship: how you can help

Setting: In Korea, sitting down to lunch with our guide while visiting my birth city.
Me (talking about one of Patrick’s past co-workers): I had never thought about Koreans being adopted into other countries besides the U.S. It was so weird to see a Korean open her mouth and speak with a Danish accent.

Our guide: Kind of like it’s weird for you to open your mouth and speak perfect English.

BUSTED!

I love to hear other adoptee stories–especially Korean ones.  And apprently, I need to here more from countries outside of the U.S. and be more sensitive to racial issues adoptees face. As a filmmaker, Deann Borshay Liem has had opportunities to tell lots of stories.  She’s already created two films, First Person Plural and In the Matter of Cha Jung Hee.  I find her third film to have the potentional to be the most interesting of them all.  Geographies of Kinship follows five Korean adoptees from the U.S. and Europe on their journeys to reconnect with their birth country and piece together their past. Their riveting stories serve as a springboard for exploring the history of transnational adoptions from Korea, from the 1950s to the present.

If you want to help bring this film to life, head to Kickstarter where you can donate to the project. There are only 5 days left.
