In addition to the specific resources for this week, we are also listening to Story of the World (SOTW) on CD, watching selected episodes of Drive Thru History, and keeping a cummulative timeline of things we learn in history. I am planning appropriate activities for Mia that are a little less complicated than last year and giving PJ freedom to research the topics on his own and come up with a way to show me he’s learned something. We do all of our memory work to song. If CC doesn’t provide a tune, we find one on CC Connected (well worth the subscription in my opinion).
History & Geography: Fertile Crescent & Ancient Hebrews
Setting the stage for this year’s history, I want the kids to grasp the transition from nomads to civilization and how the fertile crescent played into it. The first chapter of SOTW does a great job of this. The components of civilization are listed at https://mrwinandsclass.wikispaces.com/Unit+2+The+Fertile+Crescent or http://www.mrdowling.com/603-civilization.html. Also check out Weslandia in the resources below as a great read aloud.
- Lesson plan with a croissant and rap. (-,+, A,K,V)
- Video on Ancient Mesopotamia and regional recipe (-,+, A,K,V)
- Article with audio (also check out the articles on Civilization, the Sumerians, and the Hebrews) (-,+, A,V)
- Unit Study (-,+, A,K,V)
- Website on Ancient Hebrews (+, V)
Science: Classification of Living Things
- Mnemonic: King Philip Comes Over For Good Spaghetti
- Good visual and explanation of each level of classification (-,+, A,V)
I’ll probably have Mia create a visual similar to the image using different sizes and colors of construction paper. - Tree of Life: The Incredible Biodiversity of Life on Earth (CitizenKid) (-,+, V)

This is by no means a complete list but resources we will most likely use. As I come across other helpful resources, I will leave notes in the comment section below so be sure to check back as the week gets closer. Also, feel free to leave a comment with any of your suggested resources.

Hi there, just found your site while looking for CC materials. Such detail and ideas, this is a valuable resource, thank you for taking the time to post. I’ve pinned your site to my CC cycle one board. 😉
I have been searching on how to make CC work for my older children who have already gone through this part of history and geography and are too old for simple lapbooks. You have been an answer to prayer as far as showing me what to look for in order to put meat on the CC bones. THANK YOU!!
Thank you for your wonderful ideas. We are still very new to CC and homeschooling and your ideas are a tremendous blessing for us. I have a new peace that this year will be a success in our home.
Absolutely love your plans for the coming school year! Thanks for connecting with the CC Weekly Link-up!
Blessings,
Brandy
The Fertile Crescent Rap is hysterical! Thank you for sharing your resources 😉
Thank you for sharing your ideas. One of the ways we will memorize The Classification of Living Things is to look at the chart which shows the upside down triangle listing Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species. We will sing these words starting with the note “C” and go down one note as we sing each word. As we sing, we will spread out our hands like the top corners of the triangle and bring our hands a little closer together as we say each new word in descending order. After the word Species we will clap, then start our song over again. We will begin by singing slowly and each time we repeat the song, we’ll get faster and faster and see how fast we can go! I hope this explanation makes sense.
Great idea, Jenny. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for sharing your fabulous links and resources. I am grateful for your generosity.
We loved Westlandia!!

Yvana,
I’d love to see what you’re doing! I love new ideas, too. Let me know when it’s up.

Thank you for all of your hard work on this. I have been trying to figure out what history/geography curriculum I would use this year. I then thought about putting something together on my own – your site is going to be a wonderful resource. After seeing what you have done I think I can tackle this and do a good job of it. I have already been collecting resources. 🙂
I will be posting what we will be doing sometime in July. Hopefully you can take a look and give me your opinion.
Blessings,
Yvana
