{Review} What’s in the Bible?

From the Veggie Tales® creator, Phil Vischer…

WITB

We’re pretty big Veggie Tales® fans, so I was really curious to see what this DVD series was all about. Phil’s desire is for families to have a better understanding of…well…what’s in the Bible. Instead of putting words in his mouth, I’ll let you hear it straight from him.

Pretty cool idea, huh?

A couple nights ago, I pulled our copy out for the little kids. When I opened the package, I was surprised that it came with a code for downloading a digital copy of the DVD. Way to keep up with the times! There was also a discussion guide and coloring page included.

They watched both episodes which totaled almost an hour.

Visceral Vischer-al reaction from the kids? They sat through it but haven’t wanted to watch it since.

Here’s how I’ll break that down…

POSITIVES

  • A lot of the content is set to music true to Veggie-Tales-like format.
  • The characters of Muppet-like with a great sense of humor.
    WITB

  • I really appreciate the way the DVD covers sensitive subjects. It does not take a hard stance but informs that there are many opinions and elaborates on the major ones. This is a similar approach we take anyway with our kids. We want them to make their own decisions based on the evidence…especially on what we consider non-central issues. We always tell them that there are many very intelligent people who have come to different conclusions, and we may never know the truth this side of heaven. And that’s okay. Whether Creation took God 6 literal days or 6 thousand years, we believe He is powerful enough to do the literal but if it took 6 thousand years, it doesn’t change how we live out our faith.
  • There are lots of supplemental activities such as coloring pages, flashcards, a study guide, and more. While you could use this for pure entertainment, it could also be a homeschool Bible curriculum.
  • There are volumes to get you through the entire Bible.

NEGATIVES

  • The songs weren’t nearly as catchy as Veggie Tales®.
  • It’s a little content heavy for pure entertainment. Please note: Our kids have been exposed to completely mindless TV so if you’re an educational-media-only family, this won’t be an issue.
  • With almost 20 Volumes planned, this could end up being quite an investment!

Most of the volumes can be previewed at whatsinthebible.com. What do you think?
