Grow, Garden, Grow

Our gardening journey for 2010 has officially begun.  I’m going to attempt to record what we do in more detail this year if for no other reason than so we can remember next year.  Every year, we can’t seeem to remember what worked or didn’t, what we sowed directly, what we started as seedlings, what died as seedlings and we sowed directly anyway, how long to harvest, where we planted it, etc.  What Patrick and I do remember, we tend to remember differently. Go figure.

For the record, we planted the following on March 7th:

  • pole beans
  • tomatoes (rainbow, big beef, cherry)
  • snap peas
  • peppers (jalepeno, pablano, cayenne, sweet bell)
  • cucumbers (asian, ???)…hoping some turn out to be pickling
  • herbs (cilantro, chives, rosemary, parsley, basil)
  • romaine lettuce
  • soy beans
  • onions
  • yellow squash and zuccini
  • broccoli

Although we bought little biodegradable trays for starting, we found that cardboard egg cartons worked well, too.  We are not big fans of the seed starter soil we used this year though because it’s difficult to water.

Here’s what the seedlings look like a week later.

  1. We have not had luck putting the cartons directly in the ground as you're supposed to be able to do. Instead we'll wait until the seedlings are more mature and have strong root systems and put them in the ground w/o their little containers. Not sure when. Probably when the mood strikes. We don't really have a science to it. I have found that making mini green houses out of clear plastic cups turned upside down with the bottoms cut out protects them from rabbits and birds in the early stages.

  2. So after you do the seedlings in the cartons, you put them in the ground, right? How big do you let them get before you transplant them? I had a small but successful garden last year and am looking to extend this year…I'm glad you're posting about it b/c I need all the ideas I can get!
