Every year we start seedlings inside and every year they either die before we can get them outside or they don’t survive a week once they get outside. Then we stomp out and buy pre-started plants or just re-sow straight into the ground. We’ve had the most success with sowing into the ground when we make mini greenhouses out of overturned plastic cups.
We’ve even cut the bottom (now tops) out of the cups to create little plastic protectors for our garden bunnies’ favorite snack…peas.

I mentioned our conundrum to a friend who mentioned hardening off. Who knew plants needed such time and attention?
Our little indoor herb garden is looking pretty pitiful. Apparently they need better light or they’ll grow long and spindly like ours and they need a fan. A fan?!?! Seriously!?!? I hear it simulates wind which makes them grow sturdier and thicker. One website said the long spindly look is a result of babying your plants. Who knew?
So now, with the weather finally turning spring-like, I’ve been setting my watch to remind to take out the plants for their daily dose of the world. It’s like having a dog without the benefit of having someone clean your dining room and kitchen floor.
