I’ve found that many times the key to re-regulating one of our kids is to let her draw how she’s feeling. The act of drawing helps her to re-engage her higher level thinking, come out of survival mode, and communicate the root issues that caused the meltdown. The heart on the left was what she drew first to represent what she thought of my heart. Once she examined it, the funniest thing happened and she realized how untrue it was. She took it back, claiming it was what she used to think and re-drew the heart on the right which is a much healthier view of our family.
