T is for…

Toilet:  To sign ‘potty’ in ASL, you shake the sign for ‘T’ …like ‘toilet.’  I realized a while ago that Ty can pee on demand for a treat (read M&M)  so we’ve started the potty (toilet) training journey for the third time.  Because of the language delay, we’re using ASL to help Ty communicate when he needs to go.  After a couple times, I realized that he associates the sign for ‘potty’ with ‘treat’—not potty.  So convenient that they (toilet and treat) start with the same letter.  That’s actually how this blog post was born.

Tiger-doodle: PJ assigned this nickname to Ty a couple weeks ago and it stuck.  I love it because as I mentioned before, I struggle with a single syllable name.  Reciting the new nickname has become a game of sorts…like Marco Polo.  If you call out, “Ti–ger,” Ty responds, “Doodle!”

Teal: Saturday, we finally got around to purchasing new shoes for Ty and bidding farewell to the teal shoes that he had from Korea.  Patrick is estatic to shed the tacky, teal foot coverings, but I am kind of sad to see the chapter of his life in Korea coming to a more complete close.  Those shoes symballized so much of his pre-Corkum life.  Even PJ mentioned on Saturday that Ty looks so different now than when we first met him in Korea.  The physical changes (haircut, shoes, clothes, etc) are just the beginning.

Toad: Patrick found this cute garden creature the other night.  The kids enjoyed him until he started tinkling (sorry, pee doesn’t start with ‘t’) all over our dining room.

Therapy: Ty’s developmental evaluation was very encouraging…a small miracle really.  He tested almost at age for everything but one category which was slightly inconclusive.  Our first therapy session last week was very promising and showed he is even less delayed cognitively than we thought…or maybe not even atl all.  He’s a tiny walking miracle.  As suspected, his speech in much more delayed.  He’s making huge improvements day-by-day but is still far from where a 2 1/2 year old should be.

Two: Speaking of 2, we are at the terrible-twos.  Many have asked how Ty is doing.  I answer, “He’s adjusting very well which is great for him but bad for us.”  It means that he is out of shock and fully two.  Temper tantrums and all.  One of my high school students walked in the a couple weeks ago and simply said, “Melissa, you’re house looks…lived in.”  Yup, Ty is a tornado of activity with an attention span as small as he is.

Too smart: When asked if a river could ever flow upstream, PJ responded, “It never will.  Even if it stops and turns around, that direction would then become downstream.”  Profound.

Triathlon training: If you call dragging myself out of bed to jog/walk for 30 minutes or swim a couple hundred meters before the kids awake, than, yes, triathlon training continues.  Weekend bike rides are part of the plan, too.  I will confess that I’ve never been happier that hear rain than on Saturday so I could sleep in and skip the ride.  I just can’t seem to muster the energy to train harder.  Maybe as our August race gets closer, I’ll feel more pressure.  Actually, that still doesn’t get me more energy or sleep…sigh.

Tired: This one should be self-explanatory.  I’m just plain tired.  I know it’s just a season and I’m part of the problem, but I’m tired.  This one should also explain why my training is going how I described.

Thankful: We have so much for which to be thankful which is why I almost feel guilty complaining about tired.  So I’ll just be a thankful tired for now.

Just a coincidence that it’s also Tuesday.
