Mom Speak

When I yell your name really loud, it really means, “Stop!” or “I am frustrated!” or “You are close to putting Mommy over the edge!” or “Shape up or else!”  It does not mean look at me with a blank stare.

When I say, “Move!” it really means, “Get up and get out of my way, now!”  It does not mean scooch two inches or just wiggle your body.

When I say, “Dinneris ready,” it means, “Stop what you are doing, wash your hands, and report to the table.”  It does not mean continue playing and report when you feel like it.

Just so we’re clear.

  1. Husband version:

“Sure you can go out and get that and I can watch Lily…” means yea you can go run the errand you just told me you needed to do. It does not mean you can go look at shoes, check out what deals are at target, go pick up some last minute stuff at Michaels and then pickup starbucks (even if you get one for me).

“Sweetie, what would you like for dinner?” means Sweetie what would you like for dinner, I am completely on board with whatever you would like to eat and that would be fine if you decide. It does not mean you say you don't care, I decide and then you completely defy whatever I chose for dinner and pick one anyways.

    Just my 2 cents…..

  3. companion edition to “mom speak”…”wife speak” !

“take care of the dishes” means loading the dishwasher, running it, washing and drying the stuff that can't go in the dishwasher, and wiping down the sink, stove, and counters. it does not mean piling everything into/around the sink, including a few crumpled napkins, omitting rinsing anything so the leftover food fossilizes permanently onto the plates.

“play with the baby” means engaging her in one-on-one developmentally stimulating activity. it does not mean putting her in the bouncy seat in front of the xbox while reaching another level in call of duty: world of war.

“decide what you want for dinner” means think about what nutritious and diverse foods might best sustain a healthy body and don't require turning on the oven while we're running the air conditioning. it does not mean offering “ok, taco bell or domino's?”

“get off the computer” means get off the computer. it does not mean finish checking all 5897 friends' statuses on facebook, watch a couple viral videos on youtube, return some emails, chat on gchat, yahoo chat, facebook chat, and twitter chat, put up statuses on all previous applications about how your wife is nagging you to log off, then look up new blackberry models, check the apple website for any new iphone/ipad/ipod dysfunctions, and browse new egg for clearance computer parts, only to emerge from the office when you smell dinner on the table.

“i'm exhausted tonight” means i want to go to sleep, now. it does not mean i'd rather do that thing you like, or that other thing you like, or even that thing we both like.

    just so we're clear.
    🙂
