Name that tomato!

All of our tomatoes this year are volunteer.  That just means they grew out of the compost we spread throughout our garden.  We didn’t buy a single tomato seed or plant this year.  As they sprouted like weeds all over our garden, we transplanted the heartier ones to our tomato patch.  The fun part with volunteer tomatoes is that you never know what you’ll get.  We’ve found that we tend to get hybrids when we do volunteer tomatoes. At least we like to think they’re hybrids because they never look like any other tomatoes we’ve seen.

Here’s what I picked today…

This year we ended up with a lot of cherry tomatoes but they’re about half the size of the last years (or twice as big).  Our green heirlooms (those are the green stripe ones) came back which was super-exciting.  We got lots of grape-looking tomatoes (even though we’ve never grown those before…I guess we ate them).  We got plum-looking tomatoes (which we’ve also never planted) that are awesome for sandwiches because they’re not juicy.  Out of about 15 plants, we only got one with big tomatoes. That’s the big orange one on the bottom.  I like to pick them before they get too ripe so I beat the bugs.

Do any of our tomatoes look familiar to you?
