Along with sightseeing and visiting with our kids, we have also been visiting orphan care ministries. More on that another time, but in order to see one in action, today had to start early…the sun was barely up.
After that, we headed to the Gorge. We didn’t really know what to expect except that there were wild baboons.
It was a two hour drive northwest of Addis. Along the way we saw amazing country side and passed through quite a few farming villages.
Oh, and there were really cool carvings in this mountain we drove over.
One we finally arrived, the view took our breaths away. This was no joke of a gorge. It was more like a canyon! PJ did a great job of capturing its grandness.
This amazing place is actually home to some of the poorest in the area because if you can survive here, you can live here for free. Tiny homes dotted the cliff side.
We were able to hike down into it a ways. The terrain was rocky, and there were lots of cacti.
There was also this awesome smelling mint plant. Isn’t it pretty?
We stopped often to take in the view.
There was this cool, very old, kind of scary bridge.
We crossed it. (P.S. Grandpa, who is deathly afraid of heights opted to wait near the car during our escapade.)
Here’s the view from further down.
After a quick rest, we headed back up.
We were disappointed that we didn’t see any baboons down in the gorge as promised. It turns out they were at the top all along! They were a little far away for a great picture but it was cool to see them in their natural habitat.
And last, but not least, our group picture because you can’t visit a place like this and not mark it with a group shot!
